The family hung out in my office tonight. Ethan spent a lot of time on his computer, learning how to type and sell crap on Craigslist. Mia tried to use her wooden car as a skateboard. Courtney tried to not get hit in the kneecaps, and I just hung out like a creep moving my camera across the desk and floor ‘cause I’m too cheap to buy a dolly. Good times.

Nice homemade dolly Dave! The books work really well and probably cost a lot less than the dolly I built (that has yet to be featured in a short film).

Thanks Russ. It’s embarrassing to describe the dolly I was using for most shots, except that the results turned out to be mostly good. For some shots, I put the camera on a book, pointed it in the right direction, and moved the book slowly across the desk or floor. Having a hand at each corner (and using a big book) made this somewhat easy to control. Some shots I used the car that Mia stood up on, but that ended up being more difficult.

I’ve wanted to build my own little dolly system for stuff like this. Denny built one, but I’m still waiting to see the first video from his efforts (hint to Denny). Next up would be a homemade crane, then a zipline system, then a remote-control helicopter with camera mount.
